I got this dollhouse from Freecycle for, you got it, FREE! I can't believe my luck in getting such a gorgeous thing right before Christmas! It's got great bones. It was solid as a rock and in very good shape albeit, very dusty and smelly. I cannot abide contact paper as wallpaper. That will never do. Nothing 3 coats of primer won't cure! I repainted everything, added new wallpaper, replaced the window box flowers and glued on the fireplace and front steps. I worked on it for about a week.

So my total expenditure on this project:

Dollhouse-FREE from Freecycle

Primer-FREE from neighbor

Wallpaper-FREE from a client from another dollhouse project

Craft paint-FREE from another client's dollhouse project

Silk flowers-50 cents from a junk shop

Glue-FREE bought for 87 cents for my daughter's school project

So a whopping 50 cents for this dollhouse: PRICELESS!

If you follow dollhouse blogs and websites, you will see many things in this cabin that have been copied from various sources. I will try to give credit where credit is due if I can remember where I found everything!

The fireplace, as I said in my previous post, was made with cardboard and covered with caulk and egg carton "stones" then painted and topped with a stained piece of balsa wood. It has some logs in it that are just branches from my yard hot glued together and the Playmobile kettle which is hanging by a toothpick perched between the stones on the front. (Lucky accident.) The fireplace is not attached in case I decide to put the chimney on the other side of the house. Over the mantle is a deer head made from one of my daughter's plastic animals. ( I got permission to use it, I promise!) I think the idea came from this tutorial from Dollhouse Minis. I also made a primitive fireplace like theirs in another dollhouse.

The washtub is a condiment cup painted silver with a pre-made wooden washboard and some cotton batting for bubbles and some fabric scraps.

The blanket chest upstairs is the bottom of a Michael's hutch painted in the style of Grazhina as is the bench and a flower pot on the mantle. The bench is pieces of balsa wood that are precariously glued together ; )

The table is made of wood scraps and dowels cleverly disguised with a scrap of fabric. The log seats are pieces of a hickory branch from my yard. My husband makes his own hickory chips for the barbecue grill. I borrowed a couple of them : )

The Michael's hutch in the background is dressed with a piece of lace and some paper plates and a canister from About.com

Complete details of how I made the antique pie safe is in another blog entry hutch makeover.

I already had the loaf of bread that came with another dollhouse. I made the bread board from a piece of balsa and a jewelry finding that looks just like a knife. The rolling pin is made from two different sizes of wooden dowels.

The hurricane lamp on the upstairs side table (another piece of hickory and some dowels) is made from a bead and a piece of plastic tubing that came from a drinking straw or a pen or something.

The yarn rugs are one of the first things I ever made. It's just a piece of card stock cut into a circle or oval with some yarn glued around it.

The beds were made with foam and cardboard and dressed with quilts that were printed from Jim's Printable Minis--a source I use again and again. The pillows are just batting and cloth with the seams hot glued together.

Some fabric scraps hang at the windows and there's a sweet little needlepoint (printie) picture that says Home Sweet Home.
I have always wanted to live in a log cabin! I made this log cabin dollhouse from scratch a few years ago. I got the tutorial from the Tree Feathers Blog. It has full instructions and drawings on how to build a cabin from half round molding. I wanted to have a great room and a sleeping loft (like Little House on the Prairie) so I did change the measurements a little. (Can't leave well enough alone, you know.) As I recall, I wanted something very small and light because I was tired of dealing with the giant 3 story Cherrydale. (Must've been before my husband built the lazy susan table.) The logs were glued together flat side down then when dry, the walls went together Lincoln Log style. Then they were attached upright to a smooth very thin plywood bottom. I used caulk to fill in between for chinking. Everything got stained with cherry Minwax. The roof and the upstairs floor had to be reinforced with balsa wood molding and all the roof seams were hidden by the shingles which also got a coat of stain. For someone with poor spacial skills, I think it came out pretty nice!

It cost about $50 dollars to build. Here is the supply list:
Half round molding
Carpenter's wood glue
Minwax stain
2 tubes of white caulk ( I am messy with caulk!)
Pack of Skinny sticks
Pack of balsa wood dowels
Luan Plywood veneer
Dollhouse wood shingles ( probably had some of these leftover, and did not figure into the price. I usually wait until I have a 50% off coupon before I buy them--the price is ridiculous!)

After the construction was finished, I set to work on the chimney, fireplace and wishing well which were all made from cardboard, caulk and egg carton stones. The chimney and fireplace still aren't attached. I wanted to be able to change them around if I wanted.

I also wanted to have a moving door which was a bit of a challenge because I'd never done anything like it before! The door is made of wood (Lord knows how I got it to fit!) with skinny sticks glued on top to make the wood pattern. I used short pieces of a paper clip to make the pins that the door turns on. They were just jammed into a small hole in the top and bottom of the door that I made by hand. A drill bit would have been way too big!

A few years ago I wanted to change my landscape for the fall so I came up with this very cheap idea for making them. I just so happened to find miniature wire leaf garland at Dollar Tree and it came in green, red, and orange in an oak, maple, and a regular oblong leaf pattern. (Of course, I bought them all.) I got some sticks from my yard to use for the tree trunks and hot glued them to some plywood squares I had in my scrap wood drawer. Added a little moss, then twisted the wire around the branches. Voila! A green tree for summer and a red tree for fall. For winter, I put a little batting on the base and leave the tree bare.
I wanted to make a canopy of some kind, but really did not have the right kind of fabric that would drape correctly. I found this Goldfinch sock feeder in my stash and decided it looked enough like mosquito netting to give it a go. Many trials and failures ensued, but behold! A canopy. I had these neat gold buttons with lions on them which made sort of a crest that I hung above the bed. She is a princess after all. Many books, a hairbrush, mirror, and a rug complete the scene. Last fall I got inspired to work on the downstairs of the tower which was either going to be a dungeon or a witch's kitchen. Being very near Halloween, there was a lot of information on the internet about creepy dollhouse things, so I put together this witch's kitchen which is true to the story of Rapunzel anyway. Everything was stuff I had on hand except for the skull and bones which came from a Dollar General miniature skeleton I purchased in their after Halloween clearance.

The fireplace is made entirely of scrap wood and caulk. The fireplace surround came from some wooden valances that I tore out of the Williamsburg dollhouse during that remodel. I just shoved it against the round wall and glued it in, covered it with caulk and topped with a piece of stained balsa wood for the mantle. I had to cut it rounded on one side, of course. The kettle came from my daughter's Playmobile Nativity set.
The Michael's hutch was a lot of fun to decorate. It was rubbed with some midnight blue paint and sanded to look old and yucky. There are various dried herbs, bottles of potions made from beads, a scroll, a book of magic spells, a crystal ball made from a button and a clear marble, the infamous skull, a basket of poison apples, a mortar and pestle made with a suction cup and a bone from the skelton, and a specimen jar that is marked "Abnormal Brain-Do not use!" (A little nod to "Young Frankenstein"--thanks for the giggle, Mel Brooks.) Inside is a brain I made from pink Sculpey clay.

The chair was a leftover from the furniture kit that came with the Williamsburg house. #1 Rule in dollhouses: NEVER THROW ANYTHING AWAY! The broom (for flying or just cleaning up the kitchen) was easily made from some raffia, thread, and a wooden dowel. On a whim, I found a tutorial on how to make a Thanksgiving dinner. Check it out at www.mysmallobsession.com. It was super easy and fast! It sure looked funny in the oven.
It's the Apple Blossom by Walmer which is very similar to the Cherrydale that I own. The first floor was partially built so I completed the building and completely finished the inside to the owners specifications. Here it is!
I don't know why I get inspired and crank out several projects at once after weeks of doing nothing. Tutorial as follows:

Get a scrap piece of wood or cardboard. I used a 4 inch by 4 inch square that was unused from a previous dollhouse assembly. It had a tab on it that I cut off and sanded. Cardboard would probably be just as good.

It is a gift for a friend of mine who just loves my dollhouses. I pretty much copied a lot of what Chris did on hers except I used Arm and Hammer detergent. I even had the same Michael's hutch that I bashed for the cabinets! My friend loves blue so I gave it a blue tile floor, painted the cabinets blue, and used the blue check fabric on the ironing board. The hardest part was the inside of the washer and dryer which are printies from Jim's Dollhouse Printables website. I made the mop, bucket, ironing board, and the hanging lamp from stuff I had on hand. The other shelf was a trim piece off of another Michael's hutch. I hope she likes it!Jill Taylorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09551543661011499509noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133676469024263689.post-27043351637403722182011-05-01T15:06:00.000-07:002012-10-18T10:20:52.429-07:00Rapunzel, You're Driving Me Crazy!

Here is the progress on Rapunzel's tower. I finished the interior. Added shutters and a vinyl "wood" floor for the bedroom and also made a sweet little bed for her. Finished the "stone" floor in the downstairs, but I am at a loss as to what to put in there. A huge door? A mammoth fireplace? A cabinet with herbs? A table? Everything I've tried looks wrong. I've never been stuck on a project like this before!Jill Taylorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09551543661011499509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133676469024263689.post-45496522594185530472010-08-27T12:33:00.000-07:002012-10-18T10:11:42.468-07:00Things are coming along

I decided to go with what I know and forgo the fancy spray paints. I am covering the castle with egg carton bricks and grouting with caulk. Caulk is messy, but it adds nice texture for the stone blocks. I used the same technique (I don't know if you can call it that) on a fireplace, chimney, and wishing well for my from scratch log cabin I built. Can't wait to paint. That's when the magic begins.Jill Taylorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09551543661011499509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133676469024263689.post-88784914126081582432010-08-10T14:36:00.000-07:002011-05-01T15:24:11.067-07:00Day 2 of construction

Added the 2nd floor today. Started cutting out "blocks" from egg cartons. Went to Wal-Mart to get more foam board and (impulse buy) Fleck Stone Rustoleum spray paint. I'm still not sure if I'll use it or just paint the blocks with craft paint. Now that the floor is in, I can measure and cut out the window. Must check to see if I have any wood scraps for shutters.Jill Taylorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09551543661011499509noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133676469024263689.post-26747776199544599902010-08-09T19:48:00.000-07:002012-10-18T10:02:20.844-07:00Rapunzel's Tower

If I was a normal person (which perhaps by now you have figured out that I'm a bit cracked), I would have probably put this doll in the Goodwill or garage sale pile. But something about her sad and forlorn little face made me want to build her a tower. She is very close to 1:12 inch scale, so I thought maybe I could do it. I have been researching on the internet for a long time and finally came up with the plan. Lucky for me, according to the story it is a tower with no door and no stairs. I will make her a lovely bedroom with the infamous window, a cushy bed, some reading materials, maybe a mirror and a brush, and I'm thinking a cat for company. (I will probably just buy one not make one!) Downstairs will be the kitchen with a table and hutch complete with herbs just like the one that gave her her name. She will have to teleport herself down there since there will be no stairs, but this is fantasy, right? Anyway, construction has begun! The Quik-Tube has been purchased and I overcame my fear of the jig saw today by cutting out the back and the merlons on the top. It has been primed inside and out and floor and ceiling installed. The 2nd story floor is being a real pain, though. Back to the drawing board for that. I am still deciding how to finish the outside: either with egg carton blocks or with colored grout like the tutorial I just saw. I guess I will decide when I decide.Jill Taylorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09551543661011499509noreply@blogger.com1
